Meal planning and meal prepping for a week at a time is the most impactful way to ensure you stay on your weight loss or weight maintenance plan. When we meal prep we set ourselves up to stay on track and to make the choices we want instead of just eating whatever is available. Meal prepping is the number one way to achieve your goals. Here are a few ideas to successfully meal prep.
1. Set Yourself Up a Week at a Time
When you prepare a week in advance you not only don't have to cook all week long you spend less time preparing food and more time enjoying life and doing the things that really matter. You have more time for hobbies, exercising or spending time with the ones you love. Most people who eat at home spend at least 1.5 hours a day in preparing food for themselves and or their families. That equals 10.5 hours a week in the kitchen. Food prepping once a week takes an average of 2-3 hours. That is a lot of extra time to do the things you really love.
2. Plan a Menu
Write down exactly what it is you want for your nutrition for the week. Make a list of the foods that support that line of nutrition and what goal it is you are working on for the week. If it is a high protein menu plan accordingly. If it is high carbs or no starches make that list so when you are grocery shopping your food selection is supporting your goals. Making a list of foods before you go to the store will assist you in only purchasing the foods that you want and eliminates those pesky foods that seem to jump into your grocery cart like cookies or “treats”.
3. Consider the Kiddos
If you have a family or children you are cooking for and your nutrition differs from theirs you can food prep for them as well. If you plan your weekly meals for your family in advance you can use a lot of the same ingredients you already have planned for yourself. You can cook your meats or cut up your vegetables all in one sitting so the food is already prepared in advance. Also a great tip for children is to have snacks individually ready to go so if you find your children need a quick snack it is ready to go and your don't have to go into the kitchen to make additional food. Great snack bag ideas are carrot sticks, celery sticks, pretzels, chopped up fruits and yogurt just to name a few. Kids like things they can just grab and go.
4. Proper Storage
There are several ways to store your food once you have prepared it. Depending on what you preferences are you can store your food in glass containers, plastic bags or individual containers with lids. Make sure when you are storing your food that you properly identify what is in the container so as not to be confused when you get ready to eat. Dry erase markers are a great way to mark your containers. You can also use stickers or use clear see through containers for easy to identify food items.
5. Hydration Plan
Last item in healthy food prepping and eating is to make sure you drink lots and lots of water for the week. Water helps the body and supports nutrition more than any other beverage available. It has been recommended that we drink a gallon of water a day. For some that can seem to be to much. We recommend infusing your water with your favorite fruits and or vegetables. This gives you not only additional nutritional value it adds that extra flavor so your water doesn't seem so boring. Cut up your fruits and vegetables for your infused water while doing your food prep for the week. Every morning you just drop what you have prepared into your water and let it start infusing right away. You can also put your fruit or vegetables into your water the night before for that extra flavor and nutrition.
When you succeed in your planning you plan to succeed! When you food prep for the week you set yourself up for success and save yourself time.
