Research shows that as little as 1% dehydration negatively affects your mood, attention, memory and motor coordination. So while many believe they're getting enough water, the misunderstanding of proper hydration leaves them with unnecessary side effects and health concerns.
Knowing the signs of dehydration, understanding your body and utilizing tools to assist you can be your best chance at keeping your body fueled with what it needs most - water.
So how much water should I be drinking a day?
Steps to calculating how much you should be drinking:
Your weight: The first step to calculating your daily water intake is finding your weight. The amount of water a person should drink varies on their weight, which makes sense because the more someone weighs the more water they need to drink.
Divide in half: Next, you want to divide your weight in half (or 50%) to determine how much water to drink daily. For example, if you weighed 150 pounds you woulddivide that by 2 to determine that you should be drinking about 75 ounces of water every day.
Activity Level: Finally you will want to adjust that number based on how often you workout since you are expelling water when you sweat. You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you workout. So if you workout for 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake.
6 Tips For Reaching Your Daily Water Intake Goals:
Drink 2 cups (16 oz) of water before every meal
Science has proven that drinking 2 cups of water before every meal helps you to eat less during meal time and lose weight. If you do this three times daily - at breakfast, lunch, and dinner - you have already consumed 48 ounces of water.
Morning and Night Routine
Get into the habit of drinking one glass (16 oz) of water when you wake up and another 8 oz glass before you go to sleep every night. This will add another 24 ounces of water to your daily intake. The easiest way to do this is to keep a glass or container of water at your bedside, that way as soon as you wake up and start your day, you can begin drinking water.
Eat Water-Rich Foods
One sneaky way to increase the amount of water you consume on a daily basis: eat your H2O. Add fruits and vegetables with a high water content to your grocery shopping list. Some top picks include cucumber (96% water), zucchini (95% water), watermelon (92% water), and grapefruit (91% water).
Keep Track By Your Container
One thing that has proven to help people consume enough water daily is to buy a special container for their water, like this one and set a goal of how many times they will fill an finish the container. For example, if you buy a 32 oz container and need to drink 65 ounces of water a day, your goal would be to drink 2 of those daily. Need to drink more water? Try a larger container.
Fruit Infuse Your Water

" I bought this for my husband and he absolutely LOVES it! Before buying him this bottle, he didn't drink much water. He does love fruit, and he loves all the different combinations that he can make with this water bottle. Everyday he comes home and asks me to try what he's come up with that day. He also loves the longer infuser stick. He can fit more fruit in the bottle, and has compared his bottle to his coworkers. He likes to tease them that his bottle is better. I love that he's so happy with the water bottle and that it gets him to drink more water. He's so happy with it. It's kind of like tricking a kid to eat healthy food - I love it! :) "
"I am loving the infuser water bottle. I have tried several different fruit combinations and it really helps me to get more water in during the day. One of the things I liked about this particular bottle was that the infuser compartment goes all the way to the bottom of the bottle. This company has great customer service as well."
